St.Blazey_(4)_turntable_30.7.2017: the St.Blazey turntable was installed in 1951 by the firm of Cowans Sheldon, of Carlisle. It is of the ‘Mundt’ type, i.e. with carrying wheels at each end, making it unnecessary to balance locomotives being turned. Originally it was fitted for operating under vacuum power, using vacuum provided by the locomotive being turned, with reserve vacuum being stored in the two large tanks along the turntable’s edge. Today the vacuum tractor unit is not operable, so locomotives are turned by hand, by means of a geared winding mechanism. This picture shows a close-up of the turntable controls, still complete with the Cowans Sheldon builder’s plate.. roger.griffiths@hotmail.com
