92203_Westbury_20.4.1975. UK heritage steam in the 1960s and 1970s. Owned at the time by renowned wildlife and railway artist, David Shepherd (1931 - 2017), BR Class 9F 2-10-0 No.92203 Black Prince, manoeuvres at Westbury, Wiltshire, on 20th April 1975. The engine was moving to the station to pick up a railtour from Bristol and haul it to Eastleigh and back, something that could not happen today. That is because the Health and Safety authority deems the Class 9F to be unsafe because its centre driving wheels have no flanges. This, despite the fact that in BR service, 251 Class 9F travelled millions of miles without the flangeless wheels causing problems, including the haulage of passenger trains at up to 90mph (144kph)! Today the engine resides on the preserved Sheringham - Holt, North Norfolk Railway. roger.griffiths@hotmail.com
