Bristol_Barton_Hill.jpg (65853 bytes)

Bristol Barton Hill Depot on 28 August 2004. This engine shed was built by the Great Western Railway in 1872, but went out of locomotive use just five years later, when its’ engines were moved to Bristol, Bath Road depot. Barton Hill then served as a carriage shed and later a wagon works, before in the 1990s, the wheel turned full circle and the former “Res” operator took over the buildings and made them once again an engine shed. Steam returned to the depot in the 21st Century, with numerous locomotives being stabled and serviced there during the relatively many steam tours that operate into and out of, Bristol. Here two ex-GWR “Castle” Class 4-6-0: 5029 Nunney Castle and 5051 Earl Bathurst, are seen at left, with in the centre, ex-LNER Class A4 Pacific, 60009, Union of South Africa, being prepared to work next day’s “Torbay Express”.

Bristol_steam_South_Africa.jpg (134438 bytes)

Bristol_steam_South Africa: Britain is unique in that virtually every week in the year sees one or more high-speed, long-distance, steam-hauled trains running on its main lines. This is especially so in summer where at Bristol in particular, summer Sundays often sees one, sometimes two, trains depart within minutes of each other. Here are three typical Sundays in August 2015. Some miles south of Bristol, the “Royal Duchy” train stops at Yatton to pick up and on the return, drop off passengers. Gresley A4 Pacific 60009 “Union of South Africa” pulls away from Yatton , on 16 August. In the right background can be seen a metal, flame-cut facsimile of a steam locomotive. This marks the start of “The Strawberry Line,” a footpath and cycleway that utilises 8 miles/13km of the trackbed of the closed branchline from Yatton, to Cheddar.

Class A4, and interloper at Crewe being a LNER express engine, it is interesting to note that while A4 Pacific 'Mallard' holds the world speed record, it riva; 'Coronation' Pacific was still accelerating on its record attempt and had to break as it was approaching Crewe, it was still doing a respectable 114mph !

The highly successful "Torbay Express" ran from Bristol to Kingswear each Sunday from 1 August to 5 September. Four of those six workings were entrusted to a stranger to Britain's southwest, the very reliable ex-LNER Pacific 60009, Union of South Africa. The unmistakeable shape of an A4 is caught by the bright morning sunshine as in something of a hurry(!), she leaves Bristol, through Malago Vale. 8 August 2004.

Now this picture was NEVER intended! We had just seen and photographed the A4 at Victoria station and then set off to Barnes to see it on the move. Having made it as far as Clapham Junction, our train to Barnes was suddenly re-platformed and then 60009 'Union of South Africa' immediately appeared running a little early we thought! A quick dash to get into position and this was the result. A4s would never have gone through Clapham Junction in their days, operating out of Kings Cross to Scotland and the North, so its an unlikey place to picture one. Its March 2003.

A4 Pacific 60009 is taken out of Norwich Station by the class 31 to be turned on the triangle. The date is the 11th October 2003.

One of the many pleasures of travelling behind a steam loco in this age of units is observing the reaction of people to it. Even though steam runs are not unusual in the UK, regular passengers never expect to see one suddenly appear as they await their train. The result is often a look of astonishment but best of all many smiling, happy faces. Not only that, people wave at you as you go past..... that never happens when I'm on a unit...and a man with a tripod and camera suddenly appears in the middle of a field hoping to capture that moment when our train passes his vantage point. It was a really enjoyable day out made even better by perfect weather. Photographers everywhere took advantage of it whilst For those who happenned to see 60009 purely by chance, I am sure for many it made their day.

60009 'Union of South Africa' pictured at Norwich on Saturday 11th October 2003 having brought Steam Dreams 'Cathedral Express' all the way up from London Kings Cross.

There can surely be few locos that match the A4s for their sleek, stylish appearence made even more remarkable that they were born in the 1930s almost 70 years ago. I certainly count myself fortunate to be able to travel behind such a loco on the main line in todays corporate driven, unit obsessed world. Give us more real trains please...and I am sure many others would want to get on board.

The star of the show.....60009 Union of South Africa.

Todays Steam Dreams 'Cathedrals Express' is to Norwich...a journey of over 125 miles in each direction that will require water stops along the way. With 12 full coaches plus the class 31 on the rear this is a considerable load for this superbly maintained main line loco. Date is the 11th October 2003 and the place appropriately is London Kings Cross...the very station these locos departed from in their days when they provided the motive power for the runs to Scotland and the North of England.

A4 LNER 4-6-2 60009 has 'Haymarket' on the front. This loco was based in Scotland and this is the name of the shed at Edinburgh. The name 'Union of South Africa' has we believe always been carried by this loco.

60009 has now left the East Coast Main Line and is heading up the Hertford loop to the first water stop at Hertford North. It is seen between Palmers Green and Winchmore Hill where progress is slow due to a 30 MPH speed restriction for steam trains on a gloriously sunny Saturday 11th October 2003.

An appropriate way to round off our pictures featuring 60009 on the Steam Dreams 'Cathedral Express' run to Norwich and back is this view of a modern East Coast Main Line train in the form of a Eurostar with one from the days of steam, the A4 being visible in the background at Kings Cross London on the 11th October 2003.
