4771_Armathwaite_25.3.1978. UK heritage steam in the 1960s and 1970s. Steam makes a welcome return to the Settle and Carlisle line for the first time in almost ten years. LNER 2-6-2 No.4771 Green Arrow, headed the initial train on 25th March 1978 and is seen here during a photographic halt at Armathwaite, on the way from Leeds to Carlisle. The trip was organised by the Steam Locomotive Owners Association and carried a genuine headboard from “The Norfolkman” train, in a tribute to one of the UK’s champions of steam, D.W. (Bill) Harvey, who during his long railway career, had been shedmaster at a number of depots in East Anglia, in particular Norwich, the County Town of Norfolk. roger.griffiths@hotmail.com
