Steam locomotive nr. 1 on the central turntable. Two times a day the turntable is in use and this locomotive is spinned around.

BR (ex LNER) Class B12 4-6-0 No 61572, at Amersham on 28 May 2000 during "Steam on the Met 2000".

Built for the LNER in 1928 it worked in East Anglia until 1963 when the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway Society preserved it. A static exhibit until the early nineties when it was sent to the former Eastern Germany for a major overhaul, re-entering service in 1995 at its base on the North Norfolk Railway.

Some steam locos simply ooze character and this surely has to be one of them. An opportunity to picture it with a few wagons in tow or a couple of coaches on a scenic branch line would be a photographic treat. For the moment we will have to make do with this view at Doncaster Works. It is incidently a North Eastern Railways 0-6-0 tender loco 65033.

This is the splendid looking Stirling Single Great Northern Railway No 1. It was the 50th locomotive to be made at the 'Plant' which opened in 1853.

65462 is the only surviving J15 and is seen here running into Weybourne on the North Norfolk Railway whilst participating in the September 2007 Steam Gala. It is this class, which I had incorrectly called a J12 on a earlier submission celebrating 100 years of Loughton station, that used to run on what is now the Central Line. If only they still did as it is has to be one of my favourite locos.

J72 class 69023 stands in the locoshed at Grosmont, North Yorkshire Moors Railway in August 1995. This loco was built by British Railways in 1951 to a North Eastern Railway design dating from 1898
