Departmental Class 936 "Sandite" unit.
Former Class 311(103) Glasgow suburban "Blue Train" sits outside Summerlee Heritage Museum in Coatbridge, Glasgow.
This set is one of the only two 311s which survived the mass disposal phase in the 80s. These units were converted into "Sandite" sets, which were used to spread a thick paste onto the rails when track adhesion was low.
Summerlee thankfully plan to clean up and restore 103 to its previous class 311 form. This is particularly important since this is the only "Blue Train" which still contains the famous original interior.

This makes quite a sad sight really...Bulleid designed units that go back in design to the 1940's make their final appearence as they head for scrap...hopefully one might end up being preserved. We think the class last saw passenger service in the early 1990s. Bringing up the rear is 930006 at Brondesbury Park on the 9th September 2004.

Departmental units 930206 and 930204 are seen here at Clapham Junction on the 14th September 2004 on what may turn out to be their last main line run under their own power. They are heading to nearby Selhurst Depot where they are required for De-icing duties having travelled up from Ashford.

SR Departmental Unit 930204 brings up the rear of this 4 car train with 930206 leading as it passes through Clapham Junction on the 14th September 2004. They are required for De-icing duties at Selhurst but only within the Depot. Whether they will venture out on the main line again under their own power we will have to wait and see.

leaf-405-a-jp.jpg (142022 bytes)

According to my 1978 stock guide this 4 Sub...now reduced to 2 cars...is a class 405 EMU originating from 1949. We did not know for sure that these were still running so it was well worth the effort to see this old unit 930002 out on its sandite run over 54 years later. This required us to make a trip down to Hither Green on the 26th November 2003.

leaf-405-b-jp.jpg (105173 bytes)

930002 heads off towards Gillingham on the next part of its diagram. The sandite runs will come to an end by mid-December but the units might put in an appearence again on de-icing duties if any real winter weather arrives. This ageing example of a old Southern unit that was designed at the time of Bulleid was pictured at Hither Green on November 26th 2003.

Ex 4 Suburban class 405 now departmental 2 car unit 930004 makes its way through Hither Green on one of its regular runs laying down sandite to improve wheel grip during the leaf fall season. We actually saw this unit at Bournemouth Depot Open Day in 1998 but nothing beats seeing these old units out working for real...as we did on the 26th November 2003.

Although these old Southern Region DC Units are we're informed still out performing sandite duties they are not easy to track down and see during the day. This unit in the later Railtrack livery was photographed at London's Victoria Station in January 2001.

leaf-unit-sou-b-jp.jpg (142591 bytes)

This Southern DC unit in the original Railtrack livery was pictured at the Bournemouth Depot Open Weekend in 1998. These old units are apparently still being used for sandite duties but we do not know if this actual unit is still around in 2003.

In the Autumn of 1998 this, a 305 Unit we think, was active on sandite duties but has now been replaced by an MPV. Pictured at Stratford London.

We were very lucky in being able to see this. Having delayed our departure from Kensington to picture the scrap move we looked likely to miss our train from London Victoria to Faversham, but a broken rail at Rochester meant services were running about 15 mins late. Soon after our arrival at Faversham the class 310 'Hitachi Test Train' duly appeared giving us the opportunity to photograph something very unusual. The date is July 22nd 2004.

vep-hitachi-b-jp.jpg (107416 bytes)

The second coach in this unit clearly states what the purpose of it is... 'Hitachi Traction System Varification Train'. Class 310s and 312s never ran in this area as they are AC pantograph powered as opposed to DC third rail, so it makes a very odd sighting at Faversham Kent. The date is the 22nd July 2004.

This Southern slam door coach was clearly providing the third rail pick-up for the class 310 'Hitachi Test Train' giving the unit it a distinctly different look. Seen here at Faversham on July 22nd 2004.

We doubt whether a class 310 or 312 has ever been seen in this part of the country before the arrival of the 'Hitachi Test Train' now officially numbered 960201. Up until this week the test runs had been made at night and to our knowledge this picture was just prior to the departure of the very last run as the tests were then said to be complete. They are we think connected the possible introduction of commuter trains using the new high speed line. The place is Faversham and the date July 22nd 2004.
