trtrain-Bridgwater-01.jpg (162021 bytes)

Network Rail's track renewal train, consisting of 28 YXA wagons carrying around 3000 sleepers and 5 track replacement vehicles is hauled through Bridgwater station by Freightliner Class 66/6 locomotive 66622 en route to the worksite between Uphill Junction and Worle Junction in Weston-super-Mare. This was the last train to run through Bridgwater station before the line here was also closed for an engineering possesion.
This photograph shows some of the sleeper wagons at the front of the train.

trtrain-OldMixon-15-southend-01.jpg (165544 bytes)

Network Rail's track renewal train was replacing the rails and sleepers on the up Great Western Main Line between Uphill Junction and Worle Junction in Weston-super-Mare, the south and north ends of the Weston-super-Mare Loop respectively. This photograph was taken from the footbridge that crosses the railway between the the Old Mixon crescent industrial estate and the Old Mixon playing fields, about a third of a mile north of Uphill Junction.

This photograph shows the southern (rear) end of the train, in the bottom right of the picture is the rearmost of 28 YXA sleeper wagons. The wagon following contains equiptment that allows operators to unclip the old rails from the sleepers; next in line is a wagon with operators who remove the clips from the sleepers which are then taken by a conveyor belt to a hopper where they are collected; a ballast plough on the front of this wagon keeps this clear of the rails being swapped. The next wagon is the operating area for the crane that supplies the new sleepers to the conveyor on the wagon behind that lays them, and collates the old sleepers for the transport crane to convey forwards. The wagon behind this swaps the sleepers and rails, while the wagon behind that secures the new rails to the new sleepers. The penultimate wagon appears primarily to be a staff support vehicle, and I was unable to work out a purpose for the rearmost wagon - although I'm sure there must be one!

This photograph shows the rear of the two sleeper transport cranes delivers a load of old sleepers to a wagon a third of the way from the rear, before picking up new sleepers to take back to the rear of the train. The front crane will take the old sleepers to the front of the train after delivering more new sleepers here. The arrangement of using two cranes appears to be to ensure that the rear train doesn't travel as far to minimise the risk of the operating area running out of new sleepers.

This photograph shows the forward of the two sleeper transport cranes deliver a load of new sleepers to a wagon a third of the way from the rear, before collecing old sleepers to take them to the front of the train.

The bottom right of this picture shows the rearmost of 28 YXA sleeper wagons.

Looking North along the Great Western Main Line from the bridge that carries Broadway over the railway in the south of Weston-super-Mare. The Network Rail track renewal train is just the far side of Uphilll Junction, the southern end of the Weston-super-Mare loop. The welders trolley that follows is over the junction.

The line was closed for the first day of a week-long engineering possesion between Worle Junction in the northern suburbs of Weston-super-Mare and Cogload Junction north of Taunton.
