OSE train 613 crosses Alexandroupolis town, en route to Thessaloniki. Note the MLW A-457 in front! A very unusual thing, since 1997 when new adtranz engines, took all passenger duties. Later in Komotini station the A-457 left the 613 train to help a freight one to climb on mountains of Evros Photo taken on 28/1/2005

Gorgopotamos.jpg (132814 bytes)

One of the most famous bridges in Greece is the Gorgopotamos bridge, which passes its namesake river. The bridge won worldwide notoriety when it was demolished by a group of British saboteurs and participants from all branches of Greek Resistance at 25th Nov. 1942, effectively cutting a long line of supply toward German forces in Crete and South Africa. The bridge was again demolished when the German army retreated from Greece in 1944, and the current bridge was partly reconstructed from Allied forces, hence it's mixed appearance.

After it has passed the Lianokladi station 5 minutes ago, the train 501 with a European Adranz locomotive from Thessaloniki heads towards Athens at 15.45 at the 1st of March 2003, with a speed restriction of 15 km/h in the bridge, due to its age.

The last snow is already melting at the peaks behind the camera. The tortuous ascent towards the Oiti mountain range summit will guide the train through some of the most dramatic mainline mountain scenery in Southern Europe, in the photographer's opinion ;-). The line is still single-tracked in most of the Central Greece six decades after, due to the extremely rugged terrain in the area. The Lamia plain (and the namesake city) is shown in the background of this photo.
