The HZ diesel-electric A1A'A1A' locomotive no. 2043-003 hauling a train from Varazdin towards Kustosija train-stop in Zagreb.
The 2043 series was derivated from the 2061 locomotives by removing two traction motors, thus converting Co'Co' units into A1A'A1A', and reducing the overall weight from 113 to 99 tons. The new series is thus made suitable for the tracks with 16.0 t maximum axle pressure allowed. [The axle pressure of 2061 series amounts 113 t / 6 = 18.8 t, and for the new 2043 series 99 t / 6 = 16.5 t].
The other change was the replacement of the original steam turbine situated at the very end of the unit on the cab side with electric heating. This made possible lowering of the hood of the locomotive and adding front shield in the middle, making clear view for the engineers when operating in cab direction.
In 1990 ten units were planned for conversion, but due to war damages and expenses, by 1999 only six have been remade. These are mainly used in passengers' service NW from Zagreb (Zagorje), as an alternative for HZ-7121 and 7122 DMU-s.
It can be also observed at the picture that the catenary consoles had been renovated recently, on the occasion of bridging over Zagrebacka road at the train-stop of Kustosija.
