A glance at the rail in Rijeka, a dozen of meters eastbound from the exit of the railway station. Note the 3 kV = console with non-compensated (i.e. non-tensioned) catenary (supporting) wire, and the compensated double contact wire facilitating a greater cross section, required by the high DC voltage.
The white signal with three black stripes, observed at the bottom of the photo, introduces the speed limit, which had been announced previously. In Croatia, all the relevant signals are placed at the right side of the tracks, unless otherwise indicated. The picture was taken on 2000/07/31, 1:25 p.m. Photo and scan: Tin Sipos <tsipos@usa.net> |

This signal marks shunting boundary. It designates the last point preceding a switch, to which vehicles can be shunted safely, without disturbing the traffic on the neighbour track.

An interesting and uncommon sight: the consoles of this type are regularly used for 25 kV ~ 50 Hz power system. However, they are situated on 90 km long Moravice - Rijeka line, virtually the last Croatian line still powered at 3 kV =. Since the re-electrification to 25 kV ~ 50 Hz is currently in progress (about 25 % of the work has been done at the moment), the whole line is still operating at 3 kV =. For that reason, the double contact wire had to be used, facilitating a greater cross section, required by the high DC voltage.
The existing 3 kV = are as old as 45 years and demand an immediate replacement. Moreover, some major reparations of the tracks were undertaken, and consequently the old catenary was no longer appropriately adjusted to the new height of the tracks and to the central axle of the rail. In addition, the old catenary was only semi-compensated, while the new one is fully tensioned (that is, not only the double contact wire, but also the supporting wire is now tensioned), thus allowing higher speed. Once the replacement of the catenary is completed and the power stations are remade, AC current will be used throughout the whole Moravice - Rijeka line. Also, all the units of class 1061 will be sold to Slovenia, as well as the remaining EMU-s of the class 6011. The first experimentally re-electrified section was one catenary tension block between the stations Moravice and Brod Moravice. After that, from 2000/03/03 until 2000/05/19, the re-electrification was made on 25 km long rail section between the stations Skrljevo (12 km away from Rijeka) - Meja - Melnice - Plase - Zlobin - Drivenik (from Rijeka towards Moravice). This picture was taken at Zlobin station (note the "S" signal marking the stopping point for the trains heading for Rijeka) on 2000/07/31 at 2:15 p.m. Photo and scan: Tin Sipos <tsipos@usa.net> |

The track at the exit from Dugo Selo station (21 km eastbound from Zagreb Main Railway Station). There are two tracks from Zagreb to Dugo Selo, which then separate, making one-track line for Koprivnica and Hungary, and one-track line for Novska, which is seen at the picture. From Novska on the mainline continues again with two tracks towards Nova Kapela - Slavonski Brod - Vrpolje - Vinkovci - Tovarnik (Yugoslav border). All the lines mentioned above are completely electrified at 25 kV ~ 50 Hz.
The picture displays Skl 2 fixing equipment. The signal situated at the right side cancels the speed limit which had been set previously, within Dugo Selo station. Photo (April 2000): Toma Bacic <toma.bacic@zg.tel.hr>

A pre-signal in the nearby of Zagreb. Pre-signals are marked by a white board with two black triangles touching in one point. Unlike the signals, they have white signal-pole with black stripes (the signals have red stripes). The small white board below the lights reads "PsX" (Pre-signal X), which designates the appropriate main signal (e.g. PsB is the pre-signal of the signal B). Pre-signals usually have only two lights - the upper green and the lower yellow - to indicate which light is to be expected at the main signal. The distance from the pre-signal and the related main signal should be long enough for stopping the train. If the main signal cannot be observed clearly from a sufficient distance, an additional repeater of the pre-signal is inserted in between, which is marked with "PS" and with a lowermost still white light.

The main railway bridge over the Sava in Zagreb. The other is situated a few kilometres to the east, at Jakusevec, by the shunting station.
The two rail tracks observed at the picture are independent and both bi-directional, for some dozen meters afterwards they separate, one for Rijeka, and the other for Sisak and Bosnia. In 1980-s they had also different electrification; the left one was electrified at 3 kV = all the way long to Rijeka, while the right one has been originally electrified at 25 kV AC. Afterwards, the re-electrification of Zagreb - Moravice line took place, and the continuation to Rijeka is currently in progress. Photo (February 2000): Toma Bacic <toma.bacic@zg.tel.hr>

The main signal "F3" at the exit from the small shunting station of Crnomerec, next to Kustosija passengers' station. The signals on the same track are marked with letters in sequence, thus this "F3" means the sixth signal on the track no. 3. The signal-poles are painted white with red stripes and do not have any black triangles -- which distinguishes them from the pre-signals. Below the inscription there is a circle made up of twelve green lamps; lighting them up demands setting the train in motion.
This type of signalisation is suitable at the speed up to 160 km/h, which has been never exceeded in Croatia. Photo: Toma Bacic <toma.bacic@zg.tel.hr>

The main signal "F5" at the fifth track, photographed at the exit from the shunting station of Crnomerec, in the direction of Zagreb Zapadni kolodvor (West Railway Station). This signal is one of those that literally never change. The regular traffic is in progress on the tracks 1 and 2, while the other tracks are mainly used for shunting, which is done in spite of the red lights.

The catenary of Vrbovec, a small town situated at the 37th km of Zagreb - Koprivnica mainline. The point of interest at this picture is the unusual catenary supporting equipment installed around the console (I tried to point out the wires with the photo-editor). Y-shaped hanging is also present, but very faded and hardly seen in the picture. This is used to enable higher speed.
