The Como-Brunate funicular railway is one of the oldest operating in Italy: On novembre 4th 1894, the first steam cablecar left the Como station near the lake in the nowadays ”Piazza de Gasperi” and arrived in the Brunate village. In 1911 electric traction was introduced; in 1951 new blue-yellow rolling stock was introduced. In early ‘90s all the system, both tracks and rolling stock, undewent massive reconstruction. Nowaday is operate by ATM the Milano municiapal transport company. The trip takes 6 minutes and 30 seconds, with the option of two stops upon request at upper Como (where there’s depot) and Carescione over a 1084 metre railway with a maximum inclination of 55%.
