India_Arkonam_engine_shed_WT_14015 Southern Railway BG 2-8-4T WT 14015 (CLW 1965) has had a working life of just fourteen years before being made redundant and withdrawn. The engine sits cold and neglected at the rear of Arkonam engine shed, backed by the depot's massive, stone-built water tankhouse; 24.11.1979. Roger Griffiths roger.griffiths@hotmail.com

India_BG_WT 14022 Calcutta Very few of the huge 2-8-4T of Class WT were seen in a December 1979 visit, so it was good fortune indeed to see this example, WT 14022, waiting in the smog at Calcutta Howrah with Train B105, to Bandel. The service was run by the Eastern Railway, but the locomotive still carries Southern Railway lettering – very unusual for the fiercely bureaucratic management not to have changed things!

To prove that Eastern Railway steam locomotives could be clean, BG 2-8-4T WT 14002 (Chittaranjan 1959), has recently been repaired at Permabur Works and turned out in passenger green livery. The big tank engine was one of the few of her kind left in service; 2.12.1979. Roger Griffiths roger.griffiths@hotmail.com
