Syria_27_9_2008_4.jpg (134923 bytes)

Syria 27.9.2008: The chaotic conditions inside the carriage workshop at Cadem did show evidence of active restoration underway on several wooden-bodied coaches, so although no-one would commit as to why such work was being done, might it just be a small ray of hope for the future….? Of great interest at extreme right is the 4-wheel De Dion trailer formerly attached to the now unique De Dion-Bouton petrol railcar No.ACM3, seen earlier, out of use at Dera’a. Syria 28.9.2008: At just about every station along the Hedjaz Railway, there are rakes of stored wagons of many types, all of which had not been in use for many years. Here we see at Mesmie station a livestock van and a side-tip hopper, with just visible, a tank wagon and low-sided wagon on each side. All were equipped with the archaic device of a brake-man's cabin and dated from the 1900s. The livestock van bore the date of its last works overhaul - 18 February 1971! Syria 28.9.2008: A brief pause at Jebab station allows a view of a rare piece of rolling stock - a 4-wheel, wooden bodied van from 1894, supplied for the opening of the Beirut-Damascus Railway. Roger Griffiths; roger.griffiths@hotmail.com
