El-Jem is very well known by tourists for its gigantic Roman theatre. This is located just a short walk from the railway station, which has several services to Tunis every day.

The most southern station in Tunisia is located in Gabes. From here busses operate further south, a.o. to the famous holiday island Jerba. Plans for a railway line from here to the border with Lybia have never materialised.

Probably western tourists do not often visit Mahdia by train. The name of the station is only shown in Arabic writing! Mahdia is the end station of the electrified "Métro léger du Sahel" line Sousse-Monastir-Mahdia.

Metlaoui is served by two regular train pairs a day (between Tozeur and Tunis), but is better know as the starting point of the Lézard Rouge tourist train.

The "Métro léger du Sahel" serves quite a few smaller cities along the coast between Sousse and Mahdia. Moknine is one of them.

The Lézard Rouge tourist train does not stop close to the station building at Seldja, but during the time the locomotive is running around the train the process of filling freight cars with phosphate ore can be followed.
Behind the station is a shunting locomotive belonging to the Sfax-Gafsa phosphate company. The truck just brings another load of the phosphate ore from the mine.

Sfax is a city with a large port, where most of the phosphate ore is shipped to other countries. There are also factories to process the ore. On the track next to the station building is the express train from Tunis to Tozeur, hauled by two locomotives of the most recent class (040-GT, although this is not carried on the locomotives itself).

TGM - Tunisia
The TGM light rail line between Tunis and La Marsa has high platforms and a very high frequency compared with SNCFT railways. This is one of the most popular stations on the line, Sidi Bou Saïd.

Until a few years ago all trains from Tunis to the south had to run through Sousse, including some street running over a very busy square. But now a bypass has been built around Sousse and it is no longer possible to run trains between Sousse Gare and Sousse Bab-el-Jedid. The former is the end point of trains from Tunis, the latter the starting point of the "Métro léger du Sahel" electric trains to Monastir and Mahdia. The track in front of the railway station might still be used for freight trains to the harbour, but was out of service due to rebuilding of the platform you can see behind the fences.

From the balcony of my hotel I had a great view over the station area of Sousse Gare. The station is at the bottom left. Behind it is a shed, and to the left are a turntable with another shed for locomotives.

Overview of the station area of Sousse Gare. The station building is to the left. The track next to the station building used to continue towards Sousse Bab-el-Jedid and further to the south of Tunisia, but now Sousse Gare is the end station of trains from Tunis (although some change direction here and continue south).
