A metro emerges from the Tweede Beneluxtunnel, a combined road / metro tunnel under the Nieuwe Maas. The metro is running on the extended Calandlijn and is now approaching Vijfsluizen in Schiedam. On the other side of the river you can see the impressive heavy industry near Pernis. 4 November 2002

The Rotterdam Metro has two lines. The east-west line operates underground in the center of the city using third-rail, and above ground in suburban areas using overhead wire. This picture shows third-rail operation shortly after emerging aboveground.
