NSB coach B7-5 27015 in Bergen, 2005-08-12. The B7-5 has a bicycle compartment at the end. As this is not accessible for passengers, this coach always runs at the front or end of a train, or together with a luggage car (as seen here).

Interior of the NSB B7-5 27019, line Oslo - Bergen, 2005-08-15. The door that you see at the end is usually locked - the bicycle compartment is behind. The seats are comfortable, but worn down after a few years of use. By the way it's not required any more to reserve seats in these trains - but as there are no signs for a reserved seat, you may have to change seats several times if somebody with a reservation comes in.

NSB coach B7-6 27048 in Bergen, 2005-08-12.

Difference between B7-4 and B7-6: The B7-6 has standard rubber gangways on one end, to be coupled to the FR7 (bistro) which has the same rubber gangways so that it can be coupled to sleeping-cars in the night. That is because some express trains are split up in the evening, and a few cars including bistro become part of the night train. The B4 has airtight gangways which are not compatible to the rubber gangways.

The "7" generation of passenger cars was built 1982 to 1989 by Strømmen, with Wegmann bogies. They are 26.1 m long, with a bogie spacing of 18.2 m, and allowed for 150 km/h. The weight varies from 37 to 42 t. The types AB7 (with "NSB Komfort" space), B7 (coach), BC7 (with wheelchair and family compartments), FR7 (bistro) and F7 (luggage) exist, with various subtypes (referring to different gangway types or a bicycle compartment at one end). All these cars have already been refurbished once, and a further refurbishment, with air-conditioning and possible upgrading for 200 km/h, is planned. Today they are used for most long-distance express trains in Norway.

The seats are reclining, and turned into the direction of travel by the train staff. They have small tables folding out of the armrest.

NSB_B7.jpg (99556 bytes)

NSB express train Oslo - Bergen leaving Oslo S, track 4. The train consists of B7, AB7 and FR7 cars, whose shape is unmistakable, and is pulled by the El 18 2242. Originally it was planned to install a tilting system on these passenger cars, but this was never done and later NSB decided to get new tilting EMUs instead. Notice to photographers: don't use flash when it snows, unless you want an effect like this. 2000-12-29

NSB_B7_gangway.jpg (83404 bytes)

Gangway between two NSB B7 coaches, line Bergen - Oslo, 2005-08-14. The airtight gangways were something new for the B7 generation. Unfortunately, unlike SIG-II gangways, they cannot be coupled to standard rubber gangways, which means that some "transition cars" (B7-6 and FR7-3) had to be created (probably by rebuilding).
