Fløibanen, Norway's only funicular, connects the center of Bergen with the Fløien, one of the surrounding mountains. Length 844 m, lower station at 18 m, upper station at 320 m, three intermediate stations. It was built in 1918, the rolling stock was renewed in 1954, 1974 and 2002. The new cars were designed by Espen Thorup and built by Gangloff (Switzerland). It's a tradition to have one red and one blue car. This is No. 02 "Blåmann" at the lower station, which is located in a tunnel. 2005-08-13.

Floeibanen_sign.jpg (162379 bytes)

Sign at the Fløibanen funicular in Bergen, Norway. It has three intermediate stations and one extra "technical" stop without platform (with this sign explaining the reason to the passengers). Every half hour an "express" train goes the whole way without intermediate stops, in the quarter hours between the funicular stops at all stations. 2005-08-13.

This is the superb view from the top of Bergen's Floibanen or Funicular Railway and is clearly well worth the ride. However to really appreciate it you need a perfectly clear sunny day and as can be seen the 21st February 2006 was just that along with no wind resulting a very calm sea.

In late afternoon sunshine of the 21st February 2006 the red car of the Bergen Funicular Railway is seen arriving...or possibly departing...from the top station. Pictured from the city centre using a Fuji FinePix S5000 taking full advantage of the camera's x 22 optical/digital zoom....something I could not have achieved with a conventional 35M film camera.
