The Croatian Railways (HZ) have only one class of DC electric locomotives (3000V), class 1061. This class was formerly JZ class 362, and their Slovenian sister locomotives have kept the old class number. These locomotives were built by Ansaldo of Italy in the 1960s and are a variant of the Italian class E.636. The class operates on a few lines originating in Slovenia running to the coast. There are serious plans to convert these lines to 25kV AC, the overhead wire voltage that is used in the rest of Croatia, and build a connecting line to the rest of the HZ railway network. Some locomotives class 1061 would be sold to Slovenia, others would be rebuilt to 25kV locomotives. Two have already been rebuilt into class 1161.
In the picture you can see HZ 1061 022 in Rijeka station waiting for departure to the Slovenian border. The train is only one coach - a powerful engine for such a short train!
