On 1 January 2002 the ZSR (Zeleznice Slovenskej Republiky, Slovakian State Railways) were split up. The "new" ZSR is now only responsible for the infrastructure, i.e. tracks and stations. Trains are operated by the new company Zeleznicna Spolocnost, a. s., also called Zeleznicna Spolocnost Slovakia and officially abbreviated ZSSK.

Please don't be confused by the fact that the captions for the pictures, which are provided by the various contributors to the European Railway Picture Gallery, sometimes refer to rolling stock owned by ZSR (which is either historical, outdated information or based on outdated inscriptions on the vehicles themselves) or mistakenly abbreviate Zeleznicna Spolocnost, a. s., as "ZS".
