This locomotive series was manufactured by Gjuro Gjakovic Works and hence their nickname »Gjuran«. The engines were built under the licence of Brissonneau et Lotz Co. of France (ex. GEC Alsthom; today Alstom). The subclass 0 was identical to the French prototype, while the further units were adjusted for hauling both freight and passenger trains. The units of subclass 100 had the cab reconstructed and were equipped with steam generator OK 4616; while the subclass 300 had also reconstructed cabs with two command panels, but without steam generators. Today, all the subclasses have been reduced to zero, and the units have been renumbered 2041-001 to 033.

The aim of the 2041 series is heavy shunting and hauling of lighter passenger or freight trains.
