The DMU class 712/714, nicknamed »Macosa«, is two-part motor unit, consisting of a motor wagon (HŽ class 7121) and a trailer (HŽ class 4121). Two diesel-motors manufactured by MAN are situated under the floor of the motor wagon, each for every bogy. The DMU-s were produced by Đuro Đaković Works of Croatia under the licence of Macosa Co., Barcelona, Spain. They were designed for commuter transport.

  Main overhauls

By end of 1983, plans were stated for modification of the DMU class 712 »Macosa«. The first unit to enter Zagreb Railway Works was the 712-108, which stayed for repair from 1984/08/01 till 1985/07/30. The MAN diesel motors were repaired, together with hydraulic transmission, Behr-system, axle drive and the compressor. In 1985 began the installation of domestic-produced alternator (a substitution for dynamo) of the type »Iskra« AAT 1109, 28V, 95A. Further overhauls, which were initiated in 1991 at Croatian Railways, constituted a new subclass 7121-100.

The modified DMU series HZ 7121 1

Because the originally installed diesel-motors of the type MAN D 3256 BTXUE were no longer in production, Traction Dept. of Zagreb purchased in 1988 ten diesel-motors of a more recent type MAN D 2866 LUE/210. The first diesel-motors were installed on 1991/05/23 onto DMU 712-124 owned by Varaždin Traction Dept, which had been at Zagreb Railway Works since 1987/05/26. The unit was previously hauled to Italy to remake the interior.

  Main facts about the overhaul:

The overhauled DMU is now composed of two identical motor wagons. The engine car has adopted diesel motor MAN D 2866 LUE 603 with nominal power of 230 kW at 2100 rpm. The hydraulic transmitter Voith T 211r has been reconstructed for input power of 204 kW at 2100 rpm, with the equipment for drive blockade. Axle drive has been thoroughly repaired, and new conical pair of cog-wheels has been installed. There are built in new monoblock wheels. A new cooling system for the diesel motor has been placed to the side of passengers' space. The drive of auxiliary equipment is hydrostatic with constant rotation number, now independent of diesel engine rotation number. Heating of the passengers' space is manufactured by Friedmann. Heating of the driver's cab is performed using warm water of diesel engine. Some modifications have been made on cab front part, and pneumatic equipment has been installed for washing and cleaning of windshield, as well as Knorr cooling equipment. The auto-stop device manufactured by RIZ (Zagreb Radio Industry) has been built in, and the radio-dispatcher device of the type KAPSH.

By end of 1998 two DMU-s have been overhauled, namely the present units 7121-101/102 and 103/104, now operated in Osijek. After the testing of prototypes, it has been planned to perform the same modernisation on all the remaining thirty units. Contemporary technical solutions and equipment guarantee more reliable and more comfortable units fit for regional and commuter transport.
