The RAI operates the railways of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The line
Jolfa(border with Azerbaijan)-Tabriz is eletrified mainly for freight
and Tabriz-Azarshahr for commuter trains, the rest of the network is
Passenger trains are operated by RAI subsidiary Raja Passengers Trains
Company. In 2008 Raja transported 26.2 million passengers
(7% more than in 2007) producing 15.3 billion passenger-km (+10%).
TUSRC operates public transportation in Tehran. The metro network
of 4 conventional metro lines, and a 43km-long eletrified railway line
Tehran - Karaj - Mehrshahr.
Trains consist of passenger coaches sandwiched between electric
locomotives bought in China.
