Network length, gauge and electrification (2006):

On 1 January 2002 the ZSR was split up. The "new" ZSR is now only responsible for the infrastructure. Trains were operated by the new company ZSSK - Zeleznicna Spolocnost Slovakia - with divisions for passenger trains (DOP), freight operation (DNP) and rolling stock (DZKV).
In January 2005 ZSSK was split in a passenger operating company ZSSK (Zeleznicná Spolocnost Slovensko, a.s.) and a freight operating company ZSCS (Zeleznicná Spolocnost Cargo Slovakia, a.s.). Also the stock has been divided between the companies. The historic stock is owned by the Museum Documentary Center of ZSR.

In 2015 freight traffik of ZSCS amounted 34.7 million tonnes, 3.7% less than in 2014.
In 2017 passenger traffic grew by 10.5% to 72.5 million passengers, of which 45.7 million were fare-paying passengers (+17.5%).

Carbo Rail was created in 2017 by merging the railway activities of Cargosped from the Czech Republic and Rail Sped from Slovakia. The first four own locomotives have been aquired second-hand from CD Cargo.

CRW is a new open-access freight and work train operator based in Kosice. The company is also licenced to operate trains in Hungary.

Express Group (former Express Rail Slovakia) is a logistics provider that also runs open-access freight trains. They started with 1 modern leased locomotive in December 2010.

This company is a subsidiary of LTE Austria. It has started operation of open-access freight trains with its own locomotives in October 2006.

SŽDS is an open-access freight company. Its current main traffic is semi-knocked down Skoda car kits from Mlada Boleslav and Kvasiny to Solomonovo(Ukraine). SŽDS is part of the Investex group.
