Network length, gauge and electrification (2006):

On 1 January 2002 the ZSR was split up. The "new" ZSR is now only responsible for the infrastructure. Trains were operated by the new company ZSSK - Zeleznicna Spolocnost Slovakia - with divisions for passenger trains (DOP), freight operation (DNP) and rolling stock (DZKV).
In January 2005 ZSSK was split in a passenger operating company ZSSK (Zeleznicná Spolocnost Slovensko, a.s.) and a freight operating company ZSCS (Zeleznicná Spolocnost Cargo Slovakia, a.s.). Also the stock has been divided between the companies. The historic stock is owned by the Museum Documentary Center of ZSR.
In 2008 3.5% more passengers travelled with ZSSK compared to 2007. In 2009 ZSSK Cargo carried 33.8 million tonnes of freight, 24% less than in 2008.

Lokorail runs open-access freight trains with second-hand and hired locomotives from CD Cargo (Czech Republic).

This company is a subsidiary of LTE Austria. It has started operation of open-access freight trains with its own locomotives in October 2006.

PSZ operates open-access freight trains in cooperation with Hungarian private operator MMV.

RR - Regio Rail Zeleznicná Spolocnost

Regio Rail is a new open-access operator, that started to operate international slag trains from Rohoznik cement factory to Hungary in spring 2009. The company is based in Trnava. Currently (December 2010) Regio Rail does not have its own locomotives.

Network length, gauge and electrification (2008):

SŽDS is an open-access freight company. Its current main traffic is semi-knocked down Skoda car kits from Mlada Boleslav and Kvasiny to Solomonovo(Ukraine). SŽDS is part of the Investex group.
