For suburban services in the west of the country the Dutch Railways needed a train type with even faster accelleration than trainsets Plan T and V. For this they ordered a prototype series of 15 2-car trainsets. These trainsets don't have walk-through connections between the coaches, no toilets and seats with little leg room. After this series 60 more 2-car trainsets were ordered, of which 45 were rebuilt to 3-car units with an extra motorless coach.
These suburban trains, previously known as "Sprinter-2", were rebuilt to "Citypendel" trains for short distances with many passengers: There was no first class anymore and some seats were removed to create more standing place. These "Citypendel" trains operated on Rotterdam Hofplein - The Hague Central, the Zoetermeer ring line, Haarlem-Zandvoort aan Zee and during rush hours on Rotterdam Central-Maassluis.
In June 2006 the operation of this class on its most important lines (the "Hofpleinlijn" The Hague - Rotterdam Hofplein and the Zoetermeer ring line) ended, because these lines are being rebuilt to light-rail standard. They then operated on Rotterdam-Maassluis and Utrecht-Veenendaal als regulars, but were often used for strengthening trains with (rebuilt) class 2900. This became normal practice after the class was rebuilt.
In September 2006 the first two (prototypes) went to Bombardier in Randers, to be rebuilt similar to class 2900. The rebuilt trainsets are numbered 2111-2125 and 2131-2145 (old number +110, to prevent collision with the - already withdrawn - class SM'90 numbered 2101-2109). The first rebuilt trainsets entered service in autumn 2007. The last Citypendel class 2000 was transported to Bombardier in Denmark for reconstruction in the beginning of 2009.
