As a replacement for the life-expired trainsets Plan V (400/800/900) and Plan T (500), and to cope with growth in the number of passengers, NS ordered a batch of new "Sprinter" trainsets mainly for commuter travel. The trainsets are similar to class 425 built for the German Railways(DB) and are built by both Bombardier and Siemens.
The first trainsets are used for the local trains on Rotterdam-Gouda and The Hague-Gouda, but many lines will follow. At first 17 6-car trainsets were ordered but in September 2007 another batch of 32 was added. There are options for many more trains, depending on traffic growth and experience with the new trainsets. The first entered service in February 2009.
