The shunters of class 600, based on a pre-WW2 design, have reached the end of their lifespan. Therefore, NS-Reizigers (together with the Nedtrain workshops) has ordered 13 new small shunters, to be used at stations where shunting with passenger coaches takes place, and at workshops.
The selected locomotive is a standard design of Vossloh in Kiel, Germany, the factory that also built the standard Dutch class 6400 diesel locomotives. The type designation is G400B, and very similar shunters are already in service for DSB in Denmark and CFL in Luxembourg. The first locomotive arrived in October 2003, the rest of the series was delivered until January 2004.
