Speed sign (indicating max speed of 20km/h) of Schneenbergbahn (narrow gauge cog railway) in Puchberg am Schneeberg (Austria)
This line is not run by ÖBB. The same sign - at any ÖBB line - would indicate a maximum speed of 200km/h.

31 Oct 1999;

For additional service on the former ÖBB rack railway from Puchberg up to the Schneeberg in Austria the "Niederösterreichische Schneebergbahn" purchased two diesel raicars consisting of a motor unit and two cars, one of them a steering unit. A third motor unit is in stock for use with conventional cars and for freight service. For obvious reason they are called "salamanders".

Both NÖSSB diesel units at the Hochschneeberg station, upper terminus of the Schneebergbahn. To emphasize the touristic character of the line the owners decided for this rather unusual design inspired by native amphibian - note the different yellow spots on the front sides ! On this picture can be seen clearly that the dark color is a green tone even if it appears as black on most pictures.

Inside a Salamander unit there isn't plenty of space especially when you want to go on an alpine tour with big rucksack. The cars are equipped with 4+6 seats with corridor which is a quite uncomfortable affair on a meter gauge railway.

Schneebergbahn1.jpg (140073 bytes)

Schneebergbahn, Puchberg, Austria

The Schneebergbahn is a very interesting cog railway which runs from Puchberg am Schneeberg to Hochschneeberg 1,700 meter above sea level.
One trip a day is done with the steam powered train pictured here. All the other departures are with diesel powered "Salamander" trains, two of which we will meet on our way up the mountain.
