DRG SVT 137 225 in Leipzig Hbf, track 24. 2001-03-26.
This is one of 13 dieselelectric two-car units which were built in
1935 and 1936 after the success of the first prototype "Fliegender
Hamburger". They were used on the lines from Berlin to Hamburg,
Köln, Frankfurt (Main), Stuttgart and München, where they were a
lot faster than the steam trains of that time, until these express
services were stopped in 1939 because of the war. Later the DR
used them as inland trains, but also as "Vindobona" Berlin - Wien.
The train seen here was used as a salon train for the GDR
government until 1975. In 1991 it was repainted in its original
colours and used for excursions throughout the 1990s.

DRG SVT 137 225 in Leipzig Hbf, track 24. 2001-03-26. Seen from
a slightly lower perspective, it looks almost as if this train is
ready for departure. Track 24 is not used for regular trains, so
it looks like a good place to show this train, well-protected
from the weather and in good view.

This DMU was originally called SVT 137 277 (type "Köln") and had three cars. When
restoring it in the sixties, LHB erroneously gave it the number "137 851 abc". The
colours are original as in the DRG area, the rounded cab windows however are a
modification by the DB in the fifties. Only the two end cars of this train are
preserved.

Cab interior of SVT "Köln". The driver has not much space as the motor, which is mounted
on top of the end bogie, takes up most of the room. The train was built in 1936, top
speed was 160 km/h.

The SVT 137 155 was an articulated 3-car DMU designed by Franz Kruckenberg
and built 1934 to 1938 by Vereinigte Westdeutsche Waggonfabriken AG. This
train was very modern for its time, but never went into regular passenger
service as it had broken axles twice during test runs, and express DMU
services were cancelled with the beginning of the second world war. The
train stood for many years in a siding of a maintenance plant of the DR
and was eventually scrapped. All that remains is a powered bogie with
the diesel-hydraulic transmission and some fragments of the frame and
carbody of the end car. The Verkehrsmuseum Dresden has completed these parts
by reconstructing the original shape of the nose, which inspired both the
DB VT 11.5 and the DR VT 18.16. 2001-04-27.

Front of the SVT 137 155. You can see where the headlights have been.
Between the lights was a big air intake for the fans which can be seen
inside the carbody. The driver was seated quite high. Verkehrsmuseum
