Gleisanzeiger in Dresden Hbf.
Dresden Hbf. Here you can see that "Saarbrücken" and the InterCity logo were added later, but the time shown is still in the old style used in the GDR.

Dresden Hbf 2002-09-23. Not long after the service has resumed after the flood. In August the tracks were almost a meter under water.

DH_empfang.jpg (69319 bytes)

Dresden Hauptbahnhof, the main facade of the station seen from the eastern building. Built 1892 to 1895, damaged 1945, rebuilt 1949 in a simplified shape. Today much of the building is not in such a good state; an extensive rebuilding according to plans of Sir Norman Foster will take place in the next years. January 2001.

DH_hall11.jpg (127859 bytes)

Dresden Hauptbahnhof, platform track 11/12. On the left, you can see the new blue central indicator. Two local push-pull trains with class 143 locomotives are waiting for departure on tracks 12 and 13. January 2001.

DH_halle2.jpg (149856 bytes)

Dresden Hbf, 2001-02-07: interior of the big central hall. On the left (track 6, not used for regular trains) you see a shunter of class 364. On track 9, a locomotive class 234 waits with a regional train to depart to Görlitz. On track 13, a tilting EMU class 411 from Frankfurt is being cleaned. On the elevated track 18 in the background, another 234 is waiting for departure with an InterRegio train to Nürnberg.

DH_halle3.jpg (118432 bytes)

Dresden Hbf, 2001-02-07: an experimental view, trying to show all three halls from inside. On old photos this looks a lot clearer, because there wasn't as many installations on platform 5. Down in the hall you see the 364 402-8, an old DB shunter that has been rebuilt to radio control.

DH_hall.jpg (139664 bytes)

Dresden Hauptbahnhof, view of the big hall where the tracks from the west end. To both sides of the hall, elevated tracks for through trains to Schöna and Praha are going east - west through the station. In this picture from January 2001 you can see the recently installed blue train indicators. The platform between track 13 and 14 is higher than the others, which is why most ICEs begin and end here. It is planned to renew the whole roof with a new transparent membrane in the same shape, keeping most of the steel structure.

DH_hallw.jpg (70430 bytes)

Dresden Hauptbahnhof, west end of the hall. The tracks in the big hall (in the middle) are several metres lower than those in the foreground and background. In the next years it can be expected to have an ugly building site here at first, with the result of a much brighter hall once it's finished. January 2001.

DH_ITL_Rs.jpg (142682 bytes)

A new way of shunting wagons: who needs a locomotive when you have an excavator? Like this it takes several minutes to move the wagon to the other end of the platform, but as track 5 of Dresden Hbf is currently closed for constructions, it seems to be impossible to use a locomotive. The wagon belongs to ITL and is registered by the CD. Dresden Hbf, May 2001.

DH_quer.jpg (118316 bytes)

A view across Dresden Hbf (from the platform between tracks 3 and 4). It still looks a little morbid, but on the other end they have already started completely renewing the roof. 2001-08-23

DH_roof_0307.jpg (141745 bytes)

The roof of Dresden Hbf currently being renewed. The main structure of steel arches remains, but the wood and glass roof is replaced by a white, tent-like membrane, as you can see here. On the platform you can see a double deck cab car of a train to Leipzig.

DH_tafel.jpg (116093 bytes)

The new announcement in the big central hall of Dresden Hbf. This is a standard design seen in numerous stations since a few years. 2001-02-23.

DH_view2.jpg (103542 bytes)

A view across the tracks of Dresden Hbf. You can see the tilting pantograph of a class 411 unit (ICE from Frankfurt) and three regional trains with class 143 locomotives and rolling stock of type By and DBz in two different liveries. Also note the neon sign "Dresden Hauptbahnhof" in the upper right corner - it would be nice if this could be preserved (and repaired) when the station is modernized. 2001-03-21.

DHview.jpg (122407 bytes)

Dresden Hbf, view from elevated track 17 over the central tracks (with an ICT in foreground and a regional train in background) to the elevated track 5 with a double-deck train. 22 July 2000.

DH_zugang.jpg (79694 bytes)

Dresden Hauptbahnhof, interior of the waiting hall. Coming in from DH_empfang.jpg you will end up here. Ticket counters are on the left, shops for food and newspapers on the right. The big ball clock where it's hard to see what time it is, the red metal people behind the clock (with the timetable) and the blue departure indicator on the right are very common in a lot of German stations nowadays. If you continue going forward, you will end up in the train hall (DH_hall11.jpg). January 2001.

displays.jpg (74167 bytes)

In the access tunnel to the platforms at Dresden Hbf, the old electromechanic displays showing the next train (left) are being replaced by new flat screens (right). When the Photo was taken (March 1999), new displays were only installed at the entrance to track 3 and 4, operating parallel to the old displays. Here they both announce the EC 171 Hungaria to Budapest (which normally stops at track 5) and the next local train to Schöna. Compare yourself which one is easier to read.

DreHbfFE.jpg (75238 bytes)

This was the "Fürsteneingang", a special entrance for the Duke of Saxony, in Dresden Hbf. The platform is currently not in use, the front part of the entrance is used as a cinema, the rest is probably a storage room. Perhaps it will be opened again when the station is rebuilt?

ersatzwagenstandanzeiger.jpg (102881 bytes)

Train composition indicator in Dresden Hbf (track 14), June 2000. Due to technical problems, the ICE line Dresden - Frankfurt (operated by class 411 and 415) was reduced to Leipzig - Frankfurt, with connecting trains from Dresden - which are often quite different from what the white paper shows.

Dresden Hauptbahnhof will receive a new membrane roof above the platforms. This sign was recently put up in front of the station's entrance; it shows the shape of the new roof. The carrying structures will remain the same as today. 2001-03-14
