Class450-pantospaces-01.jpg (157659 bytes)

Class 450 EMUs, like all new third-rail trains built since privatisation have recesses in the roof of one coach to allow fitting of a pantograph and future conversion to OHLE operation. Although I am not aware of any plans to do this, the HSE are noted for being very much less than keen on ground level power supply.

sw_desiro_sw1.jpg (103537 bytes)

Two Desiros intended for South West Trains seen coupled together at the Open Day at the Wildenrath Test Centre of Siemens on 25 August 2002. Unlike in other european countries, gangways between the cab ends seem still to be preferred in the UK. This might be useful, but it causes a bad view for the driver. Note the third rail shoes at the bogies for operation with 750 V DC.

wildenrath1.jpg (95139 bytes)

The Wildenrath Test Centre of Siemens seen from the Visitor's Centre on the Open Day on 25 August 2002. On tracks in the picture mainly Desiros for South West Trains are stored, between them are some Combino tramcars and a class 425 EMU. On the left a historic class 221 diesel loco is visible. The smoke in the background is from the steam train of the Selfkantbahn that ran around on the test ring.

Prototype tramcar 5002, originally intended for the Kölner Verkehrsbetriebe (KVB), seen at the Open Day at the Wildenrath Test Centre of Siemens on 25 August 2002. After the first prototype of this class, tramcar 5001, crashed seriously on 23 August 1999, the project was cancelled. Since then, 5002 is stored. Picture taken from a moving train, sorry for the bad quality.
