This is South West Train's Desiro EMU Class 450...and very nice it looks to in what is surely one
of the more dazzling colour schemes that will brighten up many a grey London day. Unlike the First Great Eastern Class 360s
these have corridor connections and as a result in our humble opinion, have an improved front end appearence.

Class 450 EMUs, like all new third-rail trains built since privatisation have recesses in the roof of one coach to allow fitting of a pantograph and future conversion to OHLE operation. Although I am not aware of any plans to do this, the HSE are noted for being very much less than keen on ground level power supply.

This bogie is equipped with a contact shoe for the electric side rail
of DC lines in southern England. The Desiro UK bogies are built at
Siemens SGP Graz. The bogie is standing on a "frame sleeper track"
(Rahmenschwellengleis), a new Austrian development which has not yet
found a regularly application. 2002-09-17.

A picture that tells a story. When SWT became to first TOC to order new trains the Class 458 order was seen as a precursor to a larger order replacing Slam Door stock, the 400 series of EMU's. Due to technical difficulties it has been announced that in 2005 the CLass 458 Juniper units will be returned to owners. To replace the 400 series SWT ordered the Desiro unit - this picture was taken at Clapham Junction in early February 2004.

Of all the new liveries we have seen over the past few years this is we think one of the best
making really good use of vivid colours without becoming distasteful. This new class 450 EMU

Southwest Desiro 450 032 seen at Aachen West on 19 May 2004. For the transport
to UK, these EMUs are attached to normal freight trains (with adapter cars of
course, as normal freight cars have no Scharfenberg couplers). This train was
just brought to Aachen West by an electric loco and will be taken over by a
diesel, as the line to Montzen (Belgium) is not electrified.

Two Desiros intended for South West Trains seen coupled together at the Open
Day at the Wildenrath Test Centre of Siemens on 25 August 2002. Unlike in other
european countries, gangways between the cab ends seem still to be preferred in
the UK. This might be useful, but it causes a bad view for the driver. Note the
third rail shoes at the bogies for operation with 750 V DC.

Waterloo, on a dull St. Valentine's Day morning, Monday 14th February 2005.
Imagine the conversation :
Class 412 4-BEP unit no. 2311, one of the last two in service with South West Trains at that time, waits at the rear of a 12-car slamdoor formation about to depart empty from Platform 13. In Platform 12, Class 450 Desiro unit no. 450078 has recently arrived at the head of a 12-car formation on the 07.24 service from Basingstoke, substituting - ironically - for a 12-slam, and will soon depart at the rear of the 08.39 service to Southampton Central. The diagram starting with the 07.24 ex-Basingstoke service ran as a 12-slam every day for the rest of the week. Photo by Mark Ziemba, scan by Fuji. |

Class 444 and 450 seen at Clapham Traincare Depot - the simialrities are apparent from the front, the differences are less than apparent from this shot. Firstly the 444 units are 5 Car units, 450's are 4 car units, seating on 444 units are 2+2 rather than a rather cramped 2 + 3 on the 450 stock, and finally the 450 has two sets of doors at two thirds, whilst the 444 have two sets of doors at the end of the carriages - guess which one I like best?
