150 YEARS OF RAILWAY HISTORY. On August 19th 2006 London Underground's Central Line from
Leyton to Loughton was 150 years old and therefore forms the oldest part of the Tube network. This
is Snaresbrook...another station that still retains its 19th Century Victorian heritage...with a city bound train about
to make its stop.

Buckhurst Hill which has seen virtually no change at all since the station was re-built as far back as 1891.

150 YEARS OF RAILWAY HISTORY. On August 19th 2006 London Underground's Central Line from
Leyton to Loughton was 150 years old and therefore forms the oldest part of the Underground Network. Loughton was
first served by Tube Trains in 1948 which we understand were re-furbished 1924 Standard Stock. This was followed by
the Silver 1962 Stock and then the current 1992 trains one of which is pictured here at Loughton in late August 2006.

Not always after bridges are hit do trains have to stop using them. As the result of a 'complete idiot'
failing to see that his skip lorry will NOT go under, this bridge just to the east of Loughton Station was
hit...not for the first time I might add...and quite badly damaged. A BLACK and YELLOW horizontal bar,
that had been removed when this picture was taken, took the full force of the impact so leaving the bridge span itself relatively
unscathed but the brickwork...as can be seen in the picture...was cracked and the supporting earthwork weakened.
This incident took place in early June 2006 and was not put right for several weeks, the resulting road closure
causing considerable inconvenience as it is the only direct route for some into the town centre.
The culprit apparently backed out his lorry and to my knowledge has not been apprehended! Meanwhile this
Central Line city bound train is no doubt making a slower than usual approach to the nearby station.

Looking down from a girder bridge built in Glasgow in 1885...if I remember rightly...a westbound Central

A Central Line train of 1991-2 stock approaches Woodford station on the 6th July 2003. Following an incident at Chancery Lane at the end of January 2003, when a traction motor became detached from the train, the whole fleet were taken out of service so that modifications could be made to them. In all the history of the London Underground it was unprecedented for a whole fleet of trains to be suddenly withdrawn and operations on a Line totally halted. Normal service was not resumed until just before Easter.

A Central Line train is seen at Woodford on Sunday 6th July 2003. Most stations on this section of the Central Line are not typical Underground in appearence as they originate from Great Eastern steam days. The Epping branch of the line only became part of the Underground in the late 1940s.

A westbound London Underground 1992-stock Central Line train climbs out of a tunnel to platform 3 at Stratford high-level station, en-route to Ealing Broadway on 24 October 2005. A gap in the third (far) and fourth (middle) rails that carry +420 and -210 volts respectively can clearly be seen. This is a current section gap, enabling the power to be turned off on parts of the line without affecting the rest of it.

Leytonstone Station is an important one on the eastern section of London Tubes Central Line.
Ahead trains either branch off left and run underground for a number of stations on
the Hainault branch or go straight on taking the line to Epping which was originally
steam and remains entirely above ground. The train approaching is a westbound London
service off the Epping branch. Pictured on the 2nd September 2004.

THE FIRST LONDON UNDERGROUND ROUNDEL IS 100 YEARS OLD.
In 1908 the companies operating London's Underground trains agreed to have just one symbol to represent all the different lines. The famous iconic Roundel we know today however did not start to appear until the early 1920s. A 1992 stock deep tunnel Central Line train runs into Loughton on its way to Epping in November 2008. More pictures of LONDON UNDERGROUND marking this event can be seen on our site below.
