XX Olympic Winter Games Torino 2006 - only two more days to go - 25/02/2006: FS bilevel trainset TAF (Treno Alta Frequentazione or high-capacity train) no. 19 in Torino Porta Nuova, the city's main station, ready for departure to Pinerolo as train R31257 at 1730 hrs.
Trainset is composed of two motor cars bracketing two trailers: ALe506-019 + Le736-037 + Le736-038 + ALe426-019.
These trains actually live up to their name: Wide double doors and a smart interior design and staircase pattern allow for very fast loading and unoading of passengers in rush hour traffic. I've never seen them working in MU'ed together, though, at least on FS. (FNME of Milan has neary identical trainsets and does use them in multiples, which then allows them to fully develop their excellent qualities.)

FS Class ALe426 EMU. An unidentified ALe426 motor unit at the rear of a 4-car train headed by ALe506.025 leaving the high numbered platforms at Venezia S Lucia on Monday late afternoon on September 17th, 2001.These platforms have no canopies and are very narrow. I had only recorded the number of one unit in this train asit departed, so I have made some assumptions as follows: ALe426 units have 84 seats, whereas ALe506 have 98 or 100 (depending on the webpage with specifications on them). Both classes are outwardly identical. I then noticed the "handicapped/disabled/mobility challenged" sign on this unit. If 4 seating bays (16 seats) are used for wheelchairs then that would account for seating difference. This unit has a sign as does the 724 class trailer next to it. Italian emu/dmu unit numbers used to include seating capacity in the class number. Again assuming a "Half Factor", 84 seats in a ALe426 and 100 in a ALe506 would indicate a logical reason for these class designations.

FS Class 506 emu. ALe506-025 at Treviso on Monday June 18, 2001. This unit arrived from Venice approximately 11:00 where it discharged passengers. The destination board read "Venezia-Treviso" so a lot of people boarded thinking it was the 11:04 to Venice and it was also in the platform shown for the Venice train (R11021). Some hasty station announcements told us to use another platform and this ALe426/506 set went out of service.
