Waiting room at Beograd main station. I spent more than 4 hours in that room, after I missed the overnight train to Ljubljana due to a diversion of train 810 (via Kraljevo - Kragujevac) causing ~220 minutes delay. I continued my trip with local train 2200 to Sid (departure at Beograd at 3:20 in the morning).

Der Hauptbahnhof in Belgrad ist das grösste und das schönste historische Bahnhofsgebäude in Serbien. Dieser Palast wurde nach dem Projekt des Wiener Architekten Von Flatich unter Aufsicht des serbischen Architekten Dragiša Milutinovic erbaut.
Der Bahnhof wurde am 24.08.1884 - am Tag der Eröffnung der ersten Eisenbahnlinie in Serbien: Belgrad - Niš feierlich eingeweiht. Der erste Zug auf der Strecke Belgrad - Niš zählte etwa 200 Reisende und der Bahnhof hatte damals für Personenzüge
nur zwei Gleise. Die Stadt Belgrad zählte zu dieser Zeit 35 480 Einwohner (im Jahre 2002: 1 280 639 ). Heute hat der Belgrader Hauptbahnhof 10 Gleise und ist ein "Sackbahnhof". Das Gebäude wurde im 1. und 2. Weltkrieg mehrmals zerstört; mit dem
Wiederaufbau konnte der ursprüngliche Stil beibehalten werden. Seit 1966 ist das Gebäude unter Heimatschutz. Im Stadtteil "Prokop" wird ein neuer Durchgangsbahnhof BEOGRAD CENTAR gebaut; dieser wird in ein paar Jahren die Rolle des Belgrader
Hauptbahnhofs übernehmen; der heutige Hauptbahnhof wird geschlossen und das Gebäude wird als Museum eingerichtet.
