The old station of Sindorf on the upgraded line Cologne-Düren
(ABS 4)
seen from the western end of the platform of track 1 on 9 August 2001. The

new tracks. New catenary masts have been installed in the area of the old
platform.

seen looking eastwards from the Europaring bridge on 13 September 2001. The
southern siding on the right was removed, the ground is prepared for the single
track of the S-Bahn (urban trains). The old main tracks in the center are still
in place. At the old northern siding, which is now without catenary, new rails
are unloaded from a special train. They will be used to rebuild the siding
further left. In the background, a short second track will be added to it.

The temporary station of Sindorf on the upgraded line Cologne-Düren
(ABS 4)
seen looking eastwards on 20 September 2001. Visible is the area where the
highspeed tracks will be built. The platform on the right is between the old
and the new line, by now it is used for trains towards Aachen. For trains to
Cologne there is another platform at the south side of the old line which is
not in the picture. On the north side a third platform is built which will be
used for the trains to Aachen when the new tracks are in use. Then the platform
between the tracks will be used from the other side for trains to Cologne.

The old station of Sindorf on the upgraded line Cologne-Düren
(ABS 4)
seen looking eastwards from the Europaring bridge on 11 October 2001. The
southern siding on the right was removed, the first ballast layer for the
single track of the S-Bahn (urban trains) is prepared. The old main tracks in
the center are still in place, also is the northern siding on the left. North
of it the siding is built up new to leave more space for the highspeed tracks,
and a second track is added. The switch has wooden sleepers while the other new
tracks have concrete sleepers. On the southern main track THA 9433
(Paris-Cologne) runs through the station.

(ABS 4)
seen from west on 11 October 2001. The two tracks of the new siding are under
construction. The double-slip switch will connect them with the main tracks and
a short dead-end track. Between the catenary mast next to it and the phone box
(marked with the F) the mast with the Ne5 (stopping marker) shows where the end
of the platform was.

The old station of Sindorf on the upgraded line Cologne-Düren
(ABS 4)
seen looking eastwards from the Europaring bridge on 28 October 2001. On the
right the single track of the S-Bahn (urban trains) was just assembled, it's
catenary seems to be more or less finished. The old main tracks in the center
are still in place, also is the northern siding on the left. North of it the
siding is built up new to leave more space for the highspeed tracks, and a
second track is added. For a short period the station has six tracks, but only
five will be there when all is finished.

(ABS 4)
seen looking westwards from the Europaring bridge on 28 October 2001. On the
left the single track for the S-Bahn (urban trains) was just assembled. To give
ballast tampers and other work trains access to the new section, it is
connected with the switch of the removed siding. In the background the old
tracks are connected with the new highspeed tracks.

The upgraded line Cologne-Düren
(ABS 4)
seen looking towards east from the old platform on the north side in Sindorf on
28 October 2001. Visible is the tunnel of the Breitestraße with the old
narrower bridge still above it. The platform used to run up to the bridge, the
edge is still visible. On the south side is the first ballast layer for the
single track of the S-Bahn (urban trains). The old exit signal stands just in
front of the bridge beneath the old track. Behind it is a new distant signal,
placed at the edge of the new line behind the bridge.

The upgraded line Cologne-Düren
(ABS 4)
seen looking towards southeast from the old platform on the north side in
Sindorf on 28 October 2001. This is the temporary end of the single track that
is built for the S-Bahn (urban trains) south of the old line. It will soon be
continued, the first ballast layer is already prepared. Later the old tracks
will be replaced by the highspeed tracks which will be further north. The two
right tracks in the picture are very close together, this might be the reason
for the short catenary bracket above the old track. On the right is a Ne6 that
announces the temporary platform about one kilometer ahead.

The old station of Sindorf on the upgraded line Cologne-Düren
(ABS 4)
seen looking eastwards from the old platform on the north side on 28 October
2001. The mast with the Ne5 (stopping marker) shows where the end of the
platform was in the past. In the foreground is a connection between the two
old tracks. Behind it are the switches of the sidings. While the northern
siding is still there, the southern one was replaced by a new track for the
S-Bahn (urban trains). The place up to the two catenary masts on the right will
be used for the two highspeed tracks, so the northern siding is rebuilt on the
right, also adding a second track. At the entrance is a double-slip switch.

(ABS 4)
seen looking eastwards from the old platform on the north side on 28 October
2001. In the centre are the two tracks of the new siding. Some ballast on them
still needs to be tamped. The entrance on the left (not yet connected to the
main line), a short dead-end track in the foreground and the two siding tracks
are connected with a double-slip switch. Between this and the old main line is
the old siding. In it two switches are still visible. The first one led to a
short dead-end track, the second one was the access to the track to the goods
shed, which ended at the point from where I took this picture.

The upgraded line Cologne-Düren
(ABS 4)
seen looking towards east from the old platform on the north side in Sindorf on
18 November 2001. Visible is the tunnel of the Breitestraße with the old
narrower bridge still above it. The new track for the S-Bahn (urban trains) on
the right does not use the bridge, it's trackbed lies directly on the tunnel.
It was connected with the southern (right) old track in the background, so the
section of the southern old track in the foreground is out of service.

(ABS 4)
seen looking eastwards from the old platform on the north side on 24 November
2001. The mast with the Ne5 (stopping marker) shows where the end of the
platform was in the past. The southern old track (left) is out of service, the
trains towards Cologne use the new track for the S-Bahn (urban trains) next to
the acoustic walls on the left. The connection between the tracks was removed,
and the southern old track was equipped with a new switch. In the following
night the northern old track will be taken out of service, and the trains
towards Aachen will use the southern old track. Then the new switch will be
used as access to the old siding.

(ABS 4)
seen from the north side on 8 December 2001. You can still see where the

removed to build the first highspeed track. At this time the trains use the
southern old track and the first new track for the S-Bahn (urban trains) on the
south side.

Cologne.

to be put away due to the works, the stairs are used.

new highspeed track in the background, where D 419 (Oostende-Cologne) is
approaching, is connected to the new track for the S-Bahn (urban trains) on the

connected to the right highspeed track in the background. The northern
highspeed track in the foreground seems to be finished, while the siding on the
right is beeing rebuilt during the weekend.

The temporary station of Sindorf on the upgraded line Cologne-Düren
(ABS 4)
seen from the south side on 25 February 2002. Signs at the pedestrian tunnel
show on which side of the line the trains for a certain direction can be found.
While the outer platforms are further west, the platform between the southern
old tracks and the northern new tracks can be recognized by the wooden
handlebar. For the time the old tracks are still in service, it is accessed
from the north side. When the new tracks will be in service, the wooden stairs
being under construction will give a short access from the south side.

(ABS 4)
seen from the temporary platform at the southern highspeed track on 21 June
2002. I think the wall being constructed on the right will be the back side of
the platform for the S-Bahn (urban trains). On the left where there is a layer
of new ballast, a switch will be built, some sleepers and other parts are
already stored there. The switch will connect the single track next to the
platform with the two tracks running to Horrem.

Behind the southern temporary platform (by now used for all trains towards
Cologne) is the new platform for the S-Bahn (urban trains), which will go into
service on 15 December. The new platform is much better than the temporary one,
with a higher level (for stepless entrance), better seats and some roofs
(although they might be a bit small for all the passengers). Note that the new
station sign has another style than the old one, with white letters on a dark
blue background.
